Dog poetry

Iditarod Hero
Sleeping dog
A ball of fur and crusty snow
Laying on a poor bed of scattered straw.
What is he dreaming about?
Is it tomorrow’s run
The rugged terrain
Miles of tundra without a living thing in sight
Other than his companions?
Or maybe he dreams of going home
To his soft bed
And sleeping all day long?
He is a champion
His dreams are not made of comfortable things.
He dreams of that final stretch of wind-carved ice
When he crosses the finish line
And hears me say “good dog!”
