Finishing with Faeries!
Posted by lapazfarm on May 30th, 2006 filed in Curriculum or Lack Thereof...Want to finish the school year with something fun and lighthearted? Follow us on the fairy trail as we explore all things magical and fanciful here at Lapaz Farm!
The final two weeks of the school year are Spiderwick and Flower Faerie weeks and we have alot of fun planned, as usual. We are just at the beginning and not fully organized yet, but here are our preliminary ideas.

Spiderwick
Superboy has read the Spiderwick Chronicals books and loves them. He also has the Field Guide and Notebook of Fantastical Observations. He will be doing the fun activities in the Notebook daily, which includes various imagination-enhancing activities such as mapping the property and showing where the fairies are found, drawing his personal house brownie, and listing the steps for capturing a small dragon, among many other creative-writing activities.
We will also be doing the many fun activities on the Spiderwick website including creating a riddle, dressing a sprite, and making a wood elf mask.

Flower Fairies: We will be reading the book Fairyopolis and using it as inspiration to create our own flower fairies.

We will also use the fascinating and truly unique book Fairie-ality, to inspire our own show of fairie fashions made from pressed petals, leaves and such.
Our final craft project will be to make our fairy houses. We bought three cute unfinished bird houses from a craft store and will “renovate” them to make them fairy-friendly!
Sound like fun? Please come back to visit as I will be posting pictures as we go!

What fun! Have you seen this? http://jas.familyfun.go.com/crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=11050
Many moons ago, my kids spent weeks studying mythological creatures, and my oldest did a “report” on dragons.

That sounds like so much fun. We love faeries. My father used an old hollowed piece of log to make my DD a faerie house last fall. The top was open, but we put another piece of wood on top of it. He also cut a door into the bottom. Tierney recently decorated it with seashells her dad brought back from the beach, as well as spruced up the pinecones at the entrance.

What a great, fanciful way to end the year! I may suggest that to my daughter- I bet she’d love studying fairy lore.

This all sounds great! We will be eager to read about your fairy adventures! (Bookworm also loves Spiderwick Chronicles.)

Oh, this sounds WONDERFUL! My kids love fantasy. I love it … LOVE it, and can’t wait to see your pictures. What is the Field Guide and Notebook of Fantastical Observations? Is it something you made or bought?

The Field Guide and the Notebook are two more books by the authors of Spiderwick. The Field guide tells additional info on all the magical creatures found in Spiderwick, and the Notebook is a very interactive journal where dc can record their own “observations” of fairies and the like. There are links to both in the sidebar if you want a better description. I highly recommend them both!
