Novel idea, Superboy!
Posted by lapazfarm on July 24th, 2006 filed in Superboy Work SamplesI think everyone in homeschooling circles has heard of or read the book Eragon, which was written by a homeschooling teen. Well, Superboy has read it and, along with Troygenea, the blog of a 14 year old 4Real homeschooler, it has inspired him to write his own novel!
Superboy has actually been working on the story on and off for quite some time now and though it is still a work in progress, it has been a wonderful experience for him.
In order to get some feedback, (which he craves as much as his mommy does, LOL!) Superboy (age 10) decided to start his own blog to publish chapters from his novel The Tale of Lantis. His tale is largely influenced by some online games that he likes to play (Runescape and Adventure Quest) so it is a bit of a gothic/fantasy in tone. Vampires and talking animals and swordplay, oh my!
I am so very pleased because this is quite a different attitude towards writing than he had when in public school where every piece of writing was a practice for the end-of-the-year standardized test.(Don’t get me started!) Thank the Lord we found Bravewriter. I can honestly say that it has made all the difference in the world as I’ve seen Superboy go from hating writing to choosing to write for fun. In fact, this novel was entirely his idea and all he asks of me is the occasional editing advice.
Here is an excerpt from The Tale of Lantis:
“The further we rode the darker it got. Where once there had been fields of corn and cabbages, there were now empty fields of dirt and dead weeds. I could tell that Little Lantis was scared because I could feel him shiver in the saddle bag in which he rode. The trees became twisted with knotted roots. They reminded me of the ugliness of witches. Then dead ahead was a forest so dark that I couldn’t see beyond the first trees. I tried to see where the road went but it disappeared into darkness. It smelled like death. That’s when I knew we had reached it, Darkania.”
Please stop by The Tale of Lantis and Troygenea if you get a chance and give an aspiring author a little feedback. I am sure some words of encouragement would mean alot to both of them.

Oh … I can’t wait to read excerpts from superboy’s novel and show it to my fantasy-loving kids. I will be back when I have more time.
Kudos to YOU for helping him detoxify from the effects of standardized test training - aka public school (*LOL* We’ve been there, done that) and discover his love of writing!

I just read chapters 2 & 3 of the Tale of Sir Lantis and I think it is a really good story!! ~ Bookworm
(p.s. Theresa, we couldn’t leave a comment on Superboy’s blog, because we don’t have a blogger account. I’ll try to figure out how to set one up.
