Dressing Frames Lapaz Farm Style

Posted by lapazfarm on August 23rd, 2006 filed in Curriculum or Lack Thereof...

I got busy yesterday and made some dressing frames for JBug and Squirt. I just couldn’t see paying the prices I’ve seen on the things, so I figured “How hard can it be?” Well, it was harder than I originally thought, but not not too bad. It would be easy-breezy for some of you craftier types out there.
I bought some nice wooden frames at the dollar tree (for a dollar!), removed the glass, dug some clothes out of our donation pile, and started cutting. I cut them to size, either hemmed or glued the edges, and staple gunned them to the back of the frames. Then I painted the backing of the frames a nice coordinating color. And I only stabbed myself with the needle once and burned myself with the (HOT!) glue gun twice!

Voila! My version of dressing frames.

There is a snap, a button, a zip, and a lace/tie (I left the sleeves on the little baby clothes one cause I thought it looked cute).

Here I’ve opened a couple part way so you can see the frames and the painted backing.

I am very pleased with how they turned out and JBug is anxious to play with them. I plan on making two more. One will have buckles and one with velcro tabs, as soon as I find some around here somewhere. I also want to do one with bigger buttons.

Total cost so far: a buck each for the frames.

Total time so far: about 2 hours.

What a neat idea! When I first saw the title of your post I thought you were talking about the partitions that block off an area of a room. I made one of those myself a couple years ago and it wasn’t too hard and didn’t cost too much either. Your craftiness could be a great family project. I wouldn’t turn little ones loose with a glue gun, but they might enjoy painting the frames.

Those look great! Dressing frames have been my nemesis (either too expensive, don’t work right, too hard to make) but these look great and like something I could possibly accomplish! Thanks for sharing your idea!

Fabulous! You have inspired me. I’m with Karen, the frames have intimidated me.

Oh, trust me! If I can do it, anyone can!I am so craft challenged, especially when it comes to sewing! I have to admit, most of the time was spent on the ONE seam I did sew, on the bottom of the blue baby clothes frame. After that pathetic attempt I used hot glue or fabric glue for the rest! I may not be talented, but I AM persistant!
