Latest Notebook Page

Superboy has been slowing down a bit on the notebooking of late because he is focusing in on his experiments, his boater safety certification course, his writing, and his first Karate tournament coming up this weekend. But he did produce this nice page this week.

I really like the looks of it, as it is a bit different than the rest.

Superboy wrote a paragraph about how the old explorers decided on their routes, and under that paragraph is a pocket containing cards he made with maps of many explorers routes (Magellan, Captain Cook, Columbus, etc) and info on where they came from, where they were headed, and why.  He always gets a kick out of “antiquing” the paper to get that old parchment look. I think it is kind of cool, too!

Does Superboy get into designing the notebook? Is he just an artistic type? Or because you’ve helped him in the past, he knows how to design such beautiful and elaborate pages? Or do you do it right alongside him, making suggestions and such? I am trying to do the notebooking thing with Josh but it looks pitiable! He just wants to do the bare bones and his eyes glaze over when I suggest we get fancier and make it look nice.

    What to do?

    Blessings,

    Faith

It must have been fun to antique that page! Last time Marianna tried tea antiquing she used water solubale pen first - big mistake! Her letter to Grandma was delayed a few days while we talked of proper order and materials.

Superboy really does get into it. I think it may be in part because I have helped him design pages in the past that he kind of has a feel for what to do. Plus I am there for advice if he wants it. But mostly it is just him being creative and I try to stay out of his way as much as I can! Like, I would never have thought of some of the color combinations he comes up with (especially this last one, putting dark blue with the green/tan background pages, totally his idea) but they really seem to work. He sees things his own way, for sure. But, you know, Faith, that has not always been the case. As he does more of these notebooks, sees the results and gets all this positive feedback it really inspires him to do each page better than the last. Our first notebooks were not nearly as elaborate or as polished looking as this one, and he was less independant with them, usually going with whatever design ideas I offered him. Plus, we can’t lose sight of the real goal we have, which is to learn the material. For Superboy, this is a way to interact with the content in a meaningful way, to help cement the learning. For your Josh, he may not be making those kinds of connections right now, and that is OK too. Sure, it is nice to have this pretty product in the end, but really that is only the icing, as long as they are learning and enjoying the process.
