Wrapping it up

Posted by lapazfarm on October 27th, 2006 filed in JBug, nature study, Curriculum or Lack Thereof..., Superboy Work Samples

Today we wrapped upm the sailing unit. It sure has been alot of fun but we are ready to move on.

This week was spent mainly on two things. First of all was getting that boater safety certification. Once that was done we could focus on our read-aloud which was Pagoo by Holling C. Holling. What a wonderful book!

I know many homeschoolers are fans of Hollings work, but I had never become aquainted with him before now. What a pleasant surprise it was to find such an informative and entertaining book!

Anyhow, we read Pagoo and learned all about hermit crabs (along with alot of other fascinating sea critters like barnacles, limpets, mussels and more). These are things we had seen and knew a little bit about, but it was interesting to learn more.

Weather has been pretty crummy lately so we decided we would just have to nature journal indoors this week. Not ideal, but that’s life sometimes! We decided we wanted to draw Pagoo’s life cycle by imitating the wonderful pencil drawings of Pagoo in the margins of the book.

Here is Superboy working hard:

He drew the life cycle on the right, and on the left are stapled some coloring and labeling activities from various websites.

Here is a better view of the life cycle drawings:

I think he did a great job and really focused alot on the details.

Here is JBug’s drawing of baby Pagoo:

And she also did a coloring sheet and then cut out and glued photocopies of the drawings from the book and made her own life cycle:100_1920

Here is my nature journal entry, also a life cycle drawing:

I also added quotes from the book to go along with the various stages of Pagoo’s life cycle.

So, that is pretty much it for the ocean stuff for now. Superboy in anxious to move on to something new, knowing that he can revisit the topic any time he wishes (I’m sure he will!).

Hope your week went as well!

    Theresa,

superboy’s drawings are absolutley superb. Wow not only is he a writer but a drawer as well! He seems to have the same interests as my ds11. JBug has done a great job also, both very talented. I love seeing your notebooks they always help and inspire me.

I’m glad to hear about Pagoo, it’s a new one for me. But oddly enough (or maybe not so odd…) Marianna and I are reading Holling C. Holling’s Seabird which is fabulous! Very enjoyable. And Theresa, from one mom to another, your Nature Journal is gorgeous!

    Thanks, everyone.
Jennifer, the coincidences never cease to amaze me! And when are we going to see some more of your and Marianna’s nature journals? I loved the pictures you shared before!
