Baby steps toward a litugical lifestyle

Posted by lapazfarm on November 17th, 2006 filed in Curriculum or Lack Thereof...

I decided a while back that we were not doing enough of incorporating our beautiful Catholic faith into our day. I want our family to start living the liturgical year in a more earnest way and the children rspond so well to the rich traditions that I have no real excuse. Except my own ignorance, of course. Not being raised Catholic has left me at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to these things. So many of the ladies at the 4reallearning board I love to frequent are SOOOOO good at it that I have to admit to being a bit intimidated. But they are also wonderfully generous with their ideas and support, so I figured this was the time of year to get started. So, as a tiny baby step, today we are celebrating the memorial of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

Plans include making a St. Elizabeth lapbook, crafting a frame for a St. Elizabeth  holy card, studying the Corporal and spiritual acts of mercy, baking bread, making a St. Elizabeth spoon saint, studying Hungary, and making Hungarian Goulash.

We are all very excitied about this project and hope to make it a habit. A new Advent in our homeschool, so to speak. I will let you all know how it goes at the end of the day.

Wish us luck!

Your plans are mine almost exactly. I hope we both have a wonderful time learning more about this saint.

Sounds like a great day! My dd’s middle name is Elizabeth, so we were going to celebrate a nameday today… I was even going to bake a cake. Alas, because of sickness, etc, today we are cleaning for houseguests next week, and all my 3 littlest ones are doing is squabbling with each other. So it think we are going to have to settle for Saint’s Braids baked with Pillsbury bread dough.

What a beautiful painting! I look forward to reading more about this study. I also like what Angel shared about celebrating a name day. My younger dd’s middle name is Elizabeth, too.

I just wanted to add that Marianna and I are liking the new banner at the top of the blog. It’s amazing how much changes when one is offline for a week, isn’t it?

Thanks! It is, unfortunately, entirely inspired by the recent weather trend. And by “trend” I mean “endless string of days.”

I was brought up Catholic, but didn’t really celebrate saints’ feast days in my home. I am hoping to do more as well. It takes some planning though. This year I’ve been doing quite a bit of winging it. I agree that there are so many wonderful ideas on the boards and on blogs. Your blog is one of them.

I was brought up a practising Catholic and ‘living the liturgical year in my domestic church’ is all new to me too. I spent a few years being intimidated by all the wonderful ideas and not knowing where to start that I never did. Baby steps is the answer, just one small thing for some feasts and then add on in future years. Have fun!!
