St. Elizabeth of Hungary

Posted by lapazfarm on November 17th, 2006 filed in Random Ramblings

Today went very well!

We got so much done (everything on our plans except the spoon saint) and learned alot about this wonderful saint!

First we started the breadmaking, and in between steps we worked on our lapbooks.

I’ll show you Superboy’s first:

On the cover is a rose and loaf of bread :

Sfront

Open to a picture of St. Elizabeth and a prayer (in pink) and a recipe for Hungarian Goulash (which is simmering in the crock pot right now).

Sopen

On the right is a pretty frame with a picture of an antique St Elizabeth medal and a picture of the bread baking results. On the left are the corporal (hands) and spiritual (heart) works of mercy. They open to show the works written inside:

Sright

right flap opens to show a poem about St. Elizabeth:

Spoem

On the back a map of Europe with Hungary highlighted and lift to find a map of Hungary (not shown) . Beneath is a scene of Hugary and the Hungarian flag.

Sback
Here is JBug’s which is similar to Superboy’s, with a few changes due to age:

Jfront

Inside is similar, with the exception of the frame on right having a picture of St. Elizabeth spinning. It does not open.

Jopen

For the works of mercy the hands open to reveal a loaf of bread and a glass of water to represent the corporal works of mercy, while the heart opens to reveal that JBug has written the words “love” and “pray” to represent the spiritual works.

Jleft

On the back, since mapwork is largely meaningless to her, JBug wove some brown paper into a basket shape and filled it with bread and roses.

Jback

This inspired JBug to play St. Elizabeth baking bread with her playdoh all afternoon! Not quite a queen’s crown, but still…

And here is Superboy’s framed holy card:

He painted the frame a pale lavendar and stuck on the roses and ribbon. I think it looks pretty!

Almost as pretty as this!

Yum!!!!!!!!

Theresa, what a fabulous celebration of this feast day! I love those lapbooks! Hmmm … would you mind if I “borrowed” the idea!? :) I would love the Goulash recipe too - I might ask you over at 4real. ;) Thank you for sharing your wonderful day and all these great ideas with us!

    Theresa,
I love your lapbooks. That french bread on the cover looked so yummy until I saw the real thing your two precious children were holding…What a delicious meal you will have tonight and what memories you have made with this special saint!

Wow! Those lapbooks turned out really nicely Theresa! I am going to blatantly steal that idea (I have been doing this a lot lately) and try to do them tomorrow. Nice job and I am sure it was a lot of fun!

What a perfect day! The smiles tell all!
Providentially, I picked up a free US Catholic (9/05) from the library which has a great article on the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy using ‘Portraits of Mercy’ linked to lady saints. I was wondering how best to use this, perhaps smaller lapbooks on each saint and work of mercy, rather like your St. Elizabeth of Hungary today, both examples of which are very lovely!

That sounds like a neat idea, Jennifer. Go for it!
