Thanksgiving studies galore
Today is our last day of school before heading off this evening to FL for Thanksgiving. Given such a short time we are cramming as much as we possibly can into the day!
We were going to make a Thanksgiving lapbook, but Superboy decided instead he would rather add to his history notebook and timeline. So that is what we did!
The first page is about the Mayflowert compact. The second, “We give Thanks” has a booklet which opens up and inside Superboy listed all the things he is thankful for. The Bible verse on top is 1 Chronicals 16, 34: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his kindness endures forever.”

This page is “Gifts of the New world”. Behind the praying pilgrims is a pocket. In the pocket are three cards explaining some of the things that the pilgrims found in the New World and were thankful for.

These are the cards, pulled out: Sassafras, Turkey, and Indian corn. The Sassafras card has information on historical uses on the back.

This is how he made the Indian corn card: Drew ears of corn on parchment paper and cut out, glued onto dark green cardstock. Glued in rows of lentils.

Added leaves and then painted the lentils gold, yellow, and red.

Superboy also added to his timeline:

We also read N.C. Wyeth’s Pilgrims (which is beautiful, btw),and almost finished A Journey to the New World, The Diary of Patience Remember Whipple (we are very much enjoying this, too).
And that was it for today!Whew! Tomorrow we hope to watch the movie Squanto on the trip down to Florida.
We will be out of town for the next few days (until monday) so I will not be blogging for a few. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!

Theresa, your children are so hard-working! Their projects are wonderful!
I hope you all have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! God Bless!
Awesome!
I love the corn! How neat!
Great job!
I love the corn, too! And second the recommendation for N.C. Wyeth’s Pilgrims.
You are so talented. I can’t manage to put together notebooks well. I am always so inspired when I visit. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. And Happy Thanksgiving!
I love the corn. I am going to try this one. Your timeline notebook looks amazing. I didn’t see a category link for Superboy’s Timeline notebook. I would love to see more information on how you are doing that notebook. Your Thanksgiving presentation is wonderful. I can’t wait until we can do this sort of learning.
Another a-maizing project!
How far south do you travel in Florida?
Jennifer,
We went to West Palm Beach. Believe me, Superboy and I were constantly casting a wishful eye southward, hoping for some free time to escape and arrange to meet you guys. But we were booked solid with family obligations for the entire brief trip. So, perhaps next time?
Beautiful! The Indian corn is great. Bloglines has been so screwed up lately, but I knew you couldn’t have been quiet *that* long! LOL
How do you do your timeline notebook? Are you using a purchased timeline?
I absolutely love the works that you have the kids do. Is there any advice you could give me about your timline? It looks great and I would love to incorporate something similar into my children’s studies.
You are so creative. Great work!
Have a wonderful holiday!
Thanks, Beth! The timeline is a Book of the Centuries from a company called Homeschool in the Woods. We really like it. Superboy just sticks stuff in it whenever we learn about anything/anyone historical. He uses a combination of printed photos from the internet, drawings, handwritten info, etc, just whatever strikes his fancy at the time.
