Post-thanksgiving outing
Posted by lapazfarm on November 26th, 2006 filed in nature studyBlack friday. The malls are packed with holiday shoppers looking for a bargain. We are in South Florida, where conspicuous consumption is a way of life. What should the Lapazfarm gang do?
How about getting away from it all in a fun little outing on the intercoastal waterway and the Loxahatchee River? Yea, we think it is a much better plan!

Superboy keeps an eye out for shoals in a particularly poorly marked and shallow area.

JBug gets a fishing lesson from Daddy.

Cityboy knows how to bring ‘em in!

Of course, a little nature study is tucked in here and there! We also saw a manatee, some snake and raccoon tracks, and were lucky to spot this beauty:

A beautiful Florida Scrub Jay, a federally threatened Florida native bird.

He wasn’t a bit shy, and in fact after posing for a few pictures made it quite clear he wanted us to leave him and his harem alone by diving at me a few times! So, after a nice picnic lunch we packed up and headed back to our temporary abode with family in Juno Beach.
All and all a very nice day!

I never realized you were in Florida! Love the Scrub Jay pictures. We often see them up our way at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.

We used to live in FL (Gainesville). Now we live in NC. The pictures are from when we went to visit family in FL over Thanksgiving. Since we have alot of family down there, we still get down to FL occasionally.

Now THAT’s the way to spend Black Friday!
The pictures are fabulous. What is the creature that looks sort of like a sea star?
Lapazfarm says: You got it. It’s a sea star!

It looks like a great trip!!! How beautiful everything is!!!
I have enjoyed reading your Blog :). I love the lapbooks. My daughter and I went to a lapbook course once and did some of it. If my boys enjoyed it as much as Madison, I would do it more. They look awsome. I love your timeline…wow! You go girl!!!!!!

Being on the water is the perfect antidote for Black Friday! We did the same, exploring Mangroves where we saw lots of Sting and Eagle Rays in the shallows. The Jay is pretty, Marianna and I haven’t seen one this far south.

Josh loved the scrub jay Theresa. We thought it interesting to notice the band on his leg too. Sounds like your Black Friday was our kind of shopping day lol

That’s why I never knew you’re in Florida — because you aren’t! Hope you enjoyed your visit with family.

Wow, what a day! That’s much better than any mall! I wish we could have come right along with you!
