Well, we meant to get alot done…

Today ended up being one of those days where you just have to choose what’s important and get that done and feel happy about it. The rest, well…you just have to let it go.

Started off well with a few read-alouds. Read a couple of chapters from The American Story, which is turning out to be a big hit. They kept asking for more so I read until my voice gave out. Then Superboy reminded me that we never did finish Diary of Remember Patience Whipple and could we please, pleeeeease read that now too! Sure, just let me get some more coffee, dear.

Then Superboy did his math and I sent the littles outside to play so Superboy and I could have a little tea-time meeting to discuss plans for the upcoming weeks and  months.  Plans were discussed, priorities assessed, cookies consumed. He is really psyched about the stream study. He wants to do the chemistry this week and I think that is doable. We can always come back and do more physical stuff later. Time to break out the test kits…
Then we all took a walk with the goal of Superboy learning to identify all of the conifers in our neighborhood by sight.  I just love how very teachable this boy is! He now has them down cold: Eastern white pine, Eastern Hemlock, Eastern red cedar, and Virginia pine. He already knew Frasier fir and Red Spruce from previous hikes at altitude and longleaf pine from a trip with his dad to the coast. I just need to find him a loblolly and he will be pretty solid on the local conifers. Pages of his nature journal are filling up rapidly. I love that, by the way.

Superboy is itching to start his Around the World notebook that we have been talking about for ages, but things just have not been clicking there. Perhaps soon. He wanted to make a page on Niagara falls so I sent him to the interweb to read up. Well, he got fascinated (who knew?) and there went the rest of the afternoon!LOL! This project just may end up happening next year. That’s fine, too. I think it is better winter project than spring anyway. Who wants to be on the computer when they could be outdoors?

Before we knew it the time for Karate class had snuck up on us and our school day was over. JBug and I stopped by the book store to pick up a copy of Cat in the Hat because I cannot for the life of me find ours and I REALLY  want to read it with her tomorrow. She is so ripe for this book right now and I think it will be a big boost for her to be able to actually read some of the words in a real book.

So, not alot done, but just a few good things.  I call it a good day.

We love the American Story! We began the section on Thoreau last night and ended up in a deep conversation about “Civil Disobedience” and unjust laws, separation of Church and state…. She’s only 6 - it was so fun.
Now I have a question, is it a part of who you are to be so science oriented? I feel like we are heavy on nature study, but you amaze me. Did this build upon itself?

Yes, science is a large part of who we are. Both my husband and myself have degrees in science (myself in biology and dh in biology and chemistry) and our family is very science and nature-oriented.
And I have YOU to thank for the American Story. I bought it based on something I read at your blog!

    We’ve all had those days!

It sounds like a lot to me! :-) I am amazed at SB’s passion for learning. I love it!

We have done those planning tea times, too.

Wow, I think you get more done on days you think you didn’t do a lot than I do when I feel I’ve been really productive!

LOL! Actually, after I typed it all out it did seem like we did more than I had originally thought!
