1984: a sad, embarassing year for music
Jun 9th, 2007 by lapazfarm
I was tagged by Not June Cleaver of These Go to Eleven for this meme which brings back memories of high school. Not good memories, but really embarassing ones.
Not for me, of course because I was too cool to listen to this stuff ( my friends and I retreated into the relative sanctity of “classic rock”), but it was just a sad and embarrassing time for the music industry in general.
For the life of me I cannot figure out the resurgence in popularity of 80′s music among teenagers because it was NOT cool even back then (in “the day“). But I guess every generation’s musical trends must by law annoy the heck out of the parental generation, and the best and most horrifying way to do it to us early Gen X’ers is to bring back the 80′s. God help us.
If you read on be prepared for some really scary stuff. But first, the rules of the meme:
1. Go to http://www.popculturemadness.com/
2. Pick the year you turned 18 (left column)
3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs of the year
4. Write something about how the songs affected you
5. Pass it on to 5 more friends
So, without further adieu I bring you:
A Musical romp through 1984
For your ease of enjoyment, I have decided to group the list of “songs” into categories. My comments are in (parentheses):
Pathetic songs by previously not so bad singers:
- Say Say Say – Paul McCartney featuring Michael Jackson (Say what???)
- Owner of a Lonely Heart – Yes
- Hello – Lionel Richie
- Jump – Van Halen (note: how could you, Van Halen? It’s all down hill from here…)
- I Just Called To Say I Love You – Stevie Wonder
- What’s Love Got to Do With It – Tina Turner (Good, Lord, what’s next? Thunderdome?)
- Out of Touch – Hall & Oates (Or perhaps “out of hits?”)
Pathetic songs from movies:
- Footloose – Kenny Loggins (starring KevinBacon, he of the six degrees of separation)
- Against All Odds – Phil Collins (just one step away from Sussudio)
- Let’s Hear It For the Boy – Deniece Williams (also from Footloose)
- Ghostbusters – Ray Parker, Jr (Who ya gonna call?)
The definition of pathetic:
- Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper (None of her songs ever made sense to me.)
- The Reflex – Duran Duran (Fall of the MTV Gods)
- When Doves Cry – Prince (See comment under Cyndi Lauper)
- Missing You – John Waite (I ain’t missing you either, John)
- Let’s Go Crazy – Prince & The Revolution
- Caribbean Queen (No More Love On the Run) – Billy Ocean (Is THAT what he was saying!?! Mumbler!)
- Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go – Wham! (Winner in the “so good looking he must be gay” category)
- Like a Virgin – Madonna (Yea, right, Madonna. You just keep telling yourself that, OK?.)
Bringing back nightmares:
- Karma Chameleon – Culture Club (The horror! Truly in a class by itself)
Now I must by law tag 5 other hapless victims: (Trying to figure on folks that likely will have different years from mine, so Angela, you are off the hook!LOL!)
I tag Lissa, MaryG, Melanie, Suzanne, and Barb.
And thanks for the memories!

This was really funny. Well, you’ve brought me back to sophomore year. I have to say, say, say that I agree with most, if not all of your comments.
Thank goodness for that! How did we ever manage to get through our senior year with music so pathetic? At least we had classic rock!!
Can you please email me at all4reagan@rcn.com ? My Dh just got contacted by a headhunter in NC , and I have questions about homeschool laws, county resources, etc.
Thanks!
Oh, that is hysterical! I graduated from high school in 1985, so I know ALL these songs. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
“sigh”
I love the 80′s…even the songs that I now think are pathetic.
Oh the flashbacks I’m having…
