Veterans Day Lapbook
Nov 14th, 2007 by lapazfarm
Our Veterans Day plans went so well that for Superboy it has turned into a week long rabbit trail with an awesome lapbook as a product (thanks to Michaela for the inspiration!). We are almost finished with the movie Gettysburg, which we are very much enjoying, and we still need to discuss St Martin of Tours, patron of soldiers. Those should be finished up in the next couple of days. But I thought I’d share the Veteran’s Day lapbook since that is what he has done so far.
Here it is:

The cover with a Poppy made from coffee filters died red, and a picture of the Tomb of the Unknowns.

The whole shebang, opened up a bit. The blue folder holds info on the 5 branches of the military. On the left flap is the Coast Guard.

Inside are the seals, mottoes, and flags for the US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. All of the mottoes except for the Army were Latin, and Superboy found them very interesting.

The red folder contains information on the Heroes of 8 different wars of US involvement. The white flaps open up to reveal statistics on the number of troops who served, deaths, injuries, and number of living veterans. The map is the number of casualties from the Iraq war, state by state. It opens to show…

A military funeral at Arlington Cemetery and the musical score for Taps.

The back of the right flap has a copy of the poem “In Flanders Fields” and a paragraph Superboy wrote on the history of the poem and the Poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

The very back has pictures and info on the Purple Heart, the Medals of Honor, and the Seal of the Dept. of Veterans affairs.
Very coincidentally, we had a visit all the way from Florida from Superboy’s great uncle today. And he just happens to be a veteran of the Vietnam War and earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart there. So Superboy was lucky to get to discuss and share all of this with a real veteran!
That’s all I have time for now. I have a fussy 2yo calling my name, so I’ll post the rest of our study at the end of the week, including all of the stuff the little ones are doing!

This is very nice! Thanks for sharing it.
I want to do lapbooks, so I’m collecting ideas. This is one I will refer to.
Looks wonderful, as always! I love how many varied ideas are presented.
That looks awesome!
I am such a sap. This project almost brought tears to my eyes especially knowing that a real veteran got to see the fruit of Superboy’s hard work. That’s a very special kiddo you’ve got there.
Very nicely done!
Love your lapbook. Its done so neatly. I like all the little white books around the red pages. And the musical score for taps was a bit of genius!
I just posted pics of our Math lapbook if you’re interested. Go take a peek.
Wonderful, excellent job!! I’m so glad you posted this!
Love it! I hope I can one day get my kids into lapbooks!!
I know it’s been several years since the above lapbook was done, but you wouldn’t happen to remember what sites you used, would you? I’m planning to have my son do a Veterans Day lapbook this year, and would love to include the mini-books, seals for the different branches, etc.
Thanks.
Jen, I wish I did remember, but I don’t. I’m sorry. Most likely we just did a Google search and found what we needed.
