My big girl!
Mar 4th, 2008 by lapazfarm
This was quite a week for JBug! All in the same week (or so) she…
- got her first loose tooth
- learned to snap her fingers
- learned to whistle
- learned to do her laundry all by herself
- learned to pour hot tea from the teapot
- learned to subtract!
Now, except for the loose tooth and the subtraction, these are all things she has been working on for awhile. But this week everything just sort of seemed to all come together for her and the transformation has been almost magical! My little buggy is growing by leaps and bounds!!!
Here is a little game I put together for her today to use her newly acquired subtraction skills:

Using a set of addition/subtraction facts flash cards that have been lying around unused (because I hate flashcards with a passion) I set out her numbers one through ten and her set of colored beads. She used the beads to figure out the answers to the addition or subtraction problems, and then placed the card under the appropriate number. I could easily check her work by sorting through the piles under each number to make sure they all matched. She loved it and did half the box before stopping and saving the rest for tomorrow!
If she keeps it up at this pace I won’t be able to keep up with her for long!

Yay J-Bug! Great job!
Hey–tell me more about your counting/number beads!
I would love some new, home-made manipulatives for my son’s math work. I would love to hear exactly how you put these together!
Thanks!
Hi Juliette! Although I make many of my own materials, these particular beads were bought from Montessori Outlet. They are part of the snake game set.
I do have a home-made set that I used before got these. They are made from colored pipe cleaners and clear pony beads. You are welcome to have them if you want. Just email me with your address and I’ll send them your way.
YEAH JBug!!! I love your game, digging up those pesky flashcards, I know we have some somewheres…Hugs to that big girl!!!
Way to go, JBug!
How fun! Love your ideas!
Just wanted to tell you I posted a few videos for our middle ages study..
I also wanted to ask you opinion or idea about something..
My older son has been asking for a potions book cause he wants to make some things.. …hum… could this be chemistry? .. thinking of ways to keep him interested
blessings to you today!

Definitely sounds like chemistry to me!There are some great little books out there that feature magic-like chemistry stuff.
Also try Joey Green’s Wacky science and Steve Spangler science for free online ideas. Lots of fun!
WOW! THANKS!
I have never heard of either of those guys! took a peek at both sights.. so fun!
thanks!
OH.. LOVE the state line pictures.. what an amazing experience!
Way to go P-Nut! I am so proud of my Bug!
Dad
Congratulations J-Bug! Theresa, I am loving your Montessori math materials. I ended up ordering the beads(they are on backorder) I was wondering what other montessori math materials you use. I want to do thinks differently with my younger ones than what I did with my 9 & 10 yr old. Math is our worst subject. I ordered the multiplication and division boards for the older ones for them to supplement their current math curriculum. I just have no idea how to use them!?!!
I am also LOVING the pictures of the cross country trip. How very exciting for them!
What a cool idea!
Kirsten, the math materials we use most are the golden beads, the large and small number cards (2 sets of small), the colored beads and chains, the addition strip board, (and soon the subtraction strip board) and the hundred board with tiles. I also have the stamp game, which I plan on introducing very soon and I’m sure she will get lots of use from. The other thing is the cards that go with the addition strip boards, which I made myself. Just a set of cards with sets of addition problems to go with each number (ex: 3+1=, 3+2=, 3+3=, etc. ) I laminated them and she uses a wet erase marker to use them over and over again.
For directions on how to use the multiplication and division boards go here:multiplication board
and here:division board
Have fun!
Hello again!
I’m not sure how to send you an email without putting it in the comments. Anyway, we’re the Crone-Willis Family, 111 N. Clay Ave., St. Louis, MO, 63135. And I would love to see the home-made bead bars!
We’ll send you a Missouri care package in return!
Thanks again!!!
