Gimme shelter

Published by lapazfarm at 4:31 pm under Random Ramblings

Here is Superboy working on his latest thing–an emergency wilderness survival shelter. At this stage he has mostly assembled the skeleton of the shelter:

After he finished the skeleton, he piled on a thick layer of leaf litter to make it solid and snug, and here is the finished project:

It’s not pretty, but it is actually pretty roomy inside!

If he manages to get some food out there, I may not see him for a few days!LOL!

You know what? Tigger and I are reading Lost in the Barrens by Farley Mowat. I think Superboy would like it. Or you would. definitely links in with his survival thing.

That looks cool! I love nature shelters!

No it is not a coincidence that I am called Tigger and Jove talked about someone called Tigger. She is my mom.

My 8yo guy viewed this and said, “Whoa!” And, “I would like to make something like that someday! How did Superboy figure out how to make it? About how many sticks did it take?”

Hi Kathy! Try this link:debris hut for your 8yo. I’m not sure if it is the exact site Superboy used, but it is one of his favorite sites, so it could be.
And it really is super easy to do. An 8yo could easily do it, and it’s a great skill to have if he ever becomes lost in the woods overnight.

    Very cool!! :-)

I also enjoyed your math post earlier! I found some great resources and items for future reading. Thanks!

That smile says it all! I am sure he is just loving this. As you can see, there must be something in the water because my two are on the same track now! I’m doing my best to hold them off until we finish our last three weeks, but the weather is made for adventure!

That is fantastic. Unfortunately, if disaster strikes the house, he’ll be the only one with shelther!

    He did a great job!

My boys & DH found that book today at Barnes & Nobles. They are all begging for it now. I don’t worry about my boys as much as I as worry about the kid next door doing the stuff.

I told the kids that we are going to go back for the book when we can do more than window shopping at B&N :)

    Thank you for the suggestion.

What an awesome thing to do!

I think this would be a fun project – I’m always thinking about how I’d survive if I HAD to do it…

    Very cool…

You know, I haven’t been on the computer much lately so I haven’t kept up with your blog…any book recommendations that you could offer?

    Thank you in advance!

Maria: Superboy recommends the Boy Scout Handbook for basic outdoor skills.

That is great! It looks like he is having a blast!

My younger two just bought Backyard Ballistics for my soon to be 14 year olds birthday this Saturday. That along with The Dangerous Book ought to prove quite interesting!!

I swear if I ever had a son, I would want one just like him. *smile*

How fun. I’m going to show my boys in the morning. We’ve got a whole yard full of sticks and now they can do something other than pick them up. :o )

What a great looking shelter! I’m always amazed at the huge projects your son does.
