The eyes have it
Posted by lapazfarm on August 15th, 2008 filed in nature studySorry I’ve been so lax lately in posting here. I’ve had migraines which have kept me off the computer. Those of you who suffer migraines know excatly what I am talking about–just looking at the screen is painful. Thankfully I am feeling much better this afternoon.
So, what have the kids been up to while mom has been curled up in a ball on the couch?
Well…mostly they have been exploring the woods and fields around the house, keeping a sharp eye out for anything new and interesting.
Superboy’s ever-sharp eyes spotted this neat game trail in the woods out back. I imagine it was made by our elusive resident moose, plus some snowshoe hares. Looks like the perfect place for Superboy to hone those snare-making skills he’s been reading about.

And JBug has been stalking some small prey of her own.

She found this lovely lady crouched under our front deck. She is some kind of orb weaver in the genus Araneus, but I have not been able to key her to species yet. My spider books are still packed in boxes somewhere and online spider keys are woefully deficient. If anyone wants to key her for us, I’d be grateful. As it stands, JBug just calls her the “eyeball spider.” Sounds good to me! LOL! And if the size of her abdomen is any indication, we’ll be having lots of little eyeball spiders around here soon!
And speaking of eyeballs, I’d better go rest mine before I regret it.
“See” you soon!

That is some gorgeous spider!
“Eyeball” spider is a perfect name!
And to think, JBug was your little one who feared “bugs”! Great work, Mom and Dad!

What a spider!!!
I hope you are feeling better soon, migraines are the worst!

Wow that spider is very pretty. I have a horrid phobia of spiders that I’m slowly overcomming. I’m glad to hear that jbug is also getting over a fear of bugs. It is definately possible…especially with a healthy lust for learning! I found that if I educate myself about the species that I find around me then I no longer fear them. It has made a great difference for me.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, Theresa. Thanks for taking the time to share these great finds…sort of makes you wonder if these kids even need a teacher, eh? But of course, they do! To ooh and aah, if nothing else.

Migraines are dreadful, aren’t they! They are a true cross to bear!
Very cool spider!

“Eyeball spider” works for me.
That is a magnificent spider.
I am sorry about the migraines. I have never had them, but I had spinal headaches once (after a spinal tap) and it was the worst pain I ever experienced — childbirth & miscarriages included. I am glad you’re feeling better now, and I hope that’ll continue.

Oh, that’s just the worst kind of pain, and so debilitating. Prayers for complete recovery!

Glad your feeling better.
My boys will love looking at your neato spider tomorrow.

Ok, I have to admit, while I am terrified of spiders, that one looks amazing. I hope those migraines have eased up some.

Oh dear…I do hope the migraines ease up for you. It looks like the kids are having a great time, though. The pic of hte spider is great…but please make our day with a pic of the MOOSE!
Girlie is already planning her Alaska trip to visit, with or without me (her words!) Every post sends her closer to the edge!

I hope that you are feeling better real soon. Migraines are a bear.
That is one big spider.

Could it be a six spotted org weaver?
What an awesome pic!

WHAT a spider! I mean, we have big, ugly ones down under, but that is so unusual!
