Going bananas the Montessori way!

Posted by lapazfarm on August 17th, 2008 filed in montessori, JBug, food

One thing I love about Montessori methods is that they encourage children to be independent and to do real, meaningful work. I find that my children love to feel like they are useful contributors to the household, and I try to give them real work to do whenever possible. Here is just one example of how a six-year-old can contribute in a meaningful way to homelife.

In this post JBug will show you how she makes ( all by herself!) a super-easy yummy dessert that we all love: Banana Pudding!

So…here’s JBug!

First, you cover the bottom and sides of a pie plate with vanilla wafer cookies. Try not to eat too many or you won’t have enough to cover the bottom:

Then you mix up a batch of vanilla pudding using the directions on the box–just add milk and stir! Get out all the lumps!

(Mom’s note:We use two small or one large box of pudding mix)

Chop up two bananas into circles (I have been practicing cutting and I’m getting pretty good at it!):

Pour half of your vanilla pudding on top of your cookie crust and then lay your banana circles on top:

Then cover with the other half of your pudding:

Then put it in your refrigerator and (this is the hardest part) wait one hour before eating it so the flavors get all mushed up together.

YUMMY!I hope you like it! We all do!

Thanks so much for your comment to my post about my neighbor dilemma. The verse you shared put it all back into perspective for me. Yes, I invited her to the party, but now… thanks to your comment… I feel good about it, not resentful.

I hope your migraines give you a rest!!

She did a wonderful job! I am not sure what is up with banana pudding, but my kids have been asking for it. I think that I will let them make it sometime this week. Well after they are better that is. I sure don’t want to catch their colds.

Yummy! I can’t believe how big and “growny” she is getting!! Why is it that children seem to grow so much in the summertime!?!

The dessert looks delicious! I think I will have my 5 year old give it a try. He loves to help me cook. This looks like a good recipe to let him go (mostly)solo on. I like how Montessori follows the child and encourages children to become lifetime learners.
