Everglades escapades

Today we decided to take a little trip up to Everglades National Park–just to see what we could see. Which is kinda ever why we do anything much, really.

Anyhow, as one would expect from the name EVER glades, the thing is humongous. I think they invented the word “vast” just for this place. I’m not even going to show you a panoramic picture because:

  1. they just cannot do it justice
  2. I haven’t got a wide angle lens
  3. I am a dodo and didn’t take any panoramic shots

What I do have pictures of are some of the amazing critters we saw there (only some of them because we saw a lot more but I failed, once again, to get pictures.)

So…on to the photos.

Of course there were plenty of these guys:

There were herons of all sorts and varieties:

This great blue was such a poser.Very accommodating.

“I’m ready for my close-up!”

Greenie here was very intent on the hunt.

His motto: “Keep your eyes on the prize!”

This tri-color (aka Louisiana heron) was a new species for me:

And this delicate little blue beauty won all of our hearts:

There were big, gorgeous grasshoppers:

And bugs of a different sort:

The friendly, cuddly sort!

And did you know there are monkeys in the Everglades? It’s true! I have evidence!

A very strange, blond-headed monkey. I don’t think he’s native, do you?

“I’ve got my eye on you, buddy. Come on down outta that tree and let me get a closer look…”

Last but not least there was a pair of anhingas who were so entertaining they deserve a post all of their own

And they shall have it, tomorrow!  Be sure to come back  for “Anhinga Love.”

But for now…

Later, gator!

  1. What wonderful photos! Looks like you had a great time too. Y’all always have the neatest adventures!

I don’t know about those gators, though. They give me the heebie-jeebies.

  2. Wow!!!
I just can’t be blase’ about something that I can only hope to see in a zoo.
    Spectacular!!
    I am so jealous.
    I would be giddy.

  3. Fabulous photos and wit, too. Thanks!

  4. Great photos! I’ve lived in Florida most of my life, yet never made it to the Everglades. One of these days…

  5. Amazing wildlife photos! (And cute kid pics, too!)

  6. I have to ask, being an unknowledgable Brit and all that….

How close did you actually get to those gators? You look awfully close – which is very brave of you!

Fantastic pictures though – worth losing a finger or two for :)

  7. Oh, what a great day & great photos!
Makes me want to head down to the Everglades. It is definitely on our “must-see” list. :)

  8. Most of them were several yards away, but one of them (the one in the last picture) we were able to get so close we could easily have touched him if we’d wanted to. He was lying in the grass right next to the walking path. I had to keep a tight rein on JBug near him because she was getting too close for my comfort level. She has never seen how fast those guys can move when they want to, but I have!

  9. Did you see any pythons?

  10. What a wonderful outing and beautiful photos! Love the monkey. :-)

  11. What a blast, love all the herons!! Such a great outing, We really liked The Everglades picture book by Jean Craighead George, have you guys read that one?? It’s a nice story :) Much love,

  12. I love, love, love the photos. What fun! :)

  13. No. We didn’t see any pythons, though we were hoping we would. I suppose that’s a good sign that we didn’t see any since they don’t belong there, right?

  14. I really should not have looked at these just before my bed! I’ll be having gator nightmares now!

  15. I love your nature posts. I’ve always wanted to go to Everglades but we’ve never made it that far south yet. Also, I really appreciate your post about “inner two-year-old” (and the comment about Peter being unschooled.)

  16. What wonderful photos. Love the cuddly bug and the blonde monkey!

  17. Fabulous nature photos!

  18. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!
