I loved the "My Story" books when I was young. They are fictional diaries, "written" by children and young people during historial events. Looks like they have really expanded the range available. I really recommend!

Absolutely American by David Lipsky is the latest book I've read that I cannot stop talking about that I think would meet your requirements. Lipsky spent 4 years living at West Point following a class of cadets around for Rolling Stone magazine. So well-written, completely addictive, full of images that remain vivid in my mind. The 4th year happened to encompass 9-11, to give you a time period...

I totally agree! We love historical fiction. Another thing that really makes history personal is interviewing older family members. One of my boys who is intrigued by WWII interviewed my dad about his experience at bombardier school. I wish I had found out more of my family's history before some of its keepers passed away....

Books that I have found to be great for history are biographies. You always get a bit of the time the person lived in and what they did (both history.) I always thought of Blaise Pascal as just a math guy until we read some books he wrote on religion, wow!

Reading about people in time helps you put them in perspective in relation to world events at the time.

Well, Superboy might classify this as being in the "dusty" category, but I'm just finishing up a book called The Brendan Voyage, written by a man who in the 70's decided to build a leather boat like St. Brendan's and prove that St. Brendan could have sailed to America in it. Really excellent descriptions of how his crew braved storms at sea, icebergs, whales, etc. and proved that the boat really could make it all the way to Newfoundland.
