We’ve had such a good time on our Swan Lake rabbit trail. Who knew what a little walk to the lake could inspire? We’ve learned about Swans, geese, and ugly ducklings, we’ve watched ballets (Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty) and now… Degas and pastel dancers! (The Star. Edgar Degas) As we were watching Swan Lake [...]

This week’s artist is Paul Klee. I really like Paul Klee so I have been looking forward to this week. (Klee’s Red Balloon) Prolific and influential Swiss painter Paul Klee used a variety of artistic styles over the years, but today we focused on his beautiful, colorful cubist landscapes. The task was to do a [...]

Our artist this week: Georges-Pierre Seurat. Seurat is famous for his innovative technique of applying tiny dots of pure color side by side, allowing the viewer’s eye to blend them together into the secondary and tertiary colors (and everything in between). This week we studied John James Audubon and had birds in our brains! Happily, we get to combine art and nature study this week and sketch and paint some of our fine feathered friends. Since we have studied good old John James before, and even viewed some of his (gorgeous) originals in the Audubon House [...]

JBug’s latest famous artist was Henri Rousseau. What a lot of fun he is to study! We found a really great book about him at our library: JBug really enjoyed this one with it’s gorgeous, richly-colored pictures! (fyi there are a couple of pictures that you may want to avoid for more sensitive kids: a [...]

Last week’s art project was great fun for JBug. Our artist was Michelangelo so we spent some time looking at gorgeous images of his sculpture and paintings, most especially the amazing Sistine Chapel. (really cool virtual tour here) JBug was in awe to learn that he spent 4 years mostly on his back, painting the [...]

I’m pretty pleased with how our art appreciation is going this year. I wrote about my art plans for JBug for the year in a previous post, and for the most part we are following them closely. We spend two weeks per artist. The first week is spent getting to know an artist and a [...]

Aren’t we all? Works in progress, I mean? I could probably title EVERY post “works in progress” and remain accurate!LOL! That being said, this year has started off more smoothly than perhaps any year before and we are really hitting a groove here. I am beginning to feel like all of the plans I stressed [...]
