Unit-Study: Dogs (a mini-unit)
We are doing this unit simultaneous with our Sacred Architecture unit. We were inspired by the Iditarod to do a unit on Dogs, so, here it is.
1. Follow the Iditarod and cheer on our favorites (Jeff King and Martin Buser).
2. Read Dog Song, By Gary Paulson
3. Read excerpts from Iditarod: The Greay Race to Nome, by Bill Sherwonit
4. Getting to know Dog Breeds Scavenger Hunt: I made up this little scavenger hunt for ds to use in exploring different dog breeds. It has items like, find the largest breed. Three breeds with spots, etc. Use the Kingfisher book “Dogs” and the AKC website.
5. Choose two breeds to learn more about and write mini reports telling about them.
6. Learn dog external anatomy. Take pictures of your dogs, print them up and label their parts. Practice naming parts on your dogs until you know them by heart.
7. Canine Family Tree: Get or draw pictures of all of the members of the canine family, wolves, foxes, coyotes, etc. Learn how they are related and arrange them on a poster into a canine family tree.
8. Do the Art Attack activity on Drawing Dogs.
9. Read Iditarod chp. 5, “The Iditarod’s Unsung Heros: The Dogs” Write a poem about Iditarod dogs.
10. Make homemade doggie biscuits (recipe found online).
11. Do the “Iditamath Challenge”
That’s it for now!
